Explore SAFe® quickly, easily and cheaply with IBM’s SAFe® in a Box!

Are you interested in trying out the SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework®) support in IBM’s Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM) solution, but don’t know how to get started? Maybe you think it is just too hard, or too expensive, especially if you are just in the exploration phase. Consider the new SAFe in a Box Software as a Service (Saas) offering to provision a Rational Team Concert (RTC) environment on the cloud without downloading any software or configuring anything at all – except the templates of course. And, it’s inexpensive! For $59 a month, you get the RTC Track and Plan capabilities with the SAFe methodology built in through the templates.

SAFe 4.0 Templates for RTC Track and Plan

The SAFe 4.0 templates are currently in beta and available for RTC 6.0.2. You can find them and all information about our SAFe 4.0 support on the SAFe 4.0 Assets site. Our intent is to make the templates generally available and fully supported in the near future. You can take a look at them in the RTC 6.0.3 M6 published on, but you don’t have to wait to try them out. Once you provision an RTC environment on the cloud, you can simply import the SAFe templates and put them to use by following the instructions in the How to use the SAFe 4.0 templates in CLM document.

Use this Saas environment to establish a sandbox to explore the SAFe support for Portfolios and Programs or establish a real production environment and launch your first Agile Release Trains.

SAFe Portfolio Support

To support the SAFe Portfolio level, with or without Value Streams, RTC’s SAFe 4.0 Portfolio template creates the tooling infrastructure complete with work items and attributes consistent with SAFe and the necessary planning capabilities in support of key SAFe concepts such as Kanban, economic thinking and value-based delivery. You can choose to expand on this by provisioning a full CLM environment that includes requirements and quality management tooling via Rational DOORS Next Generation (RDNG) and Rational Quality Manager (RQM) that provides additional SAFe support for solution elaboration and validation as well as articulation of business strategy and investment that drives change in product and software delivery. Adopt as much – or as little – of the SAFe methodology that makes sense for you.

RTC SAFe Program Support

SAFe Programs are supported through RTC via the SAFe 4.0 Program template. Just like the Portfolio support, this template provides the work items and attributes along with complete support for SAFe activities to help you launch Agile Release Trains and drive Program Increment (PI) planning and execution across you Programs and Teams.
