Jazz Jazz Community Blog Introducing Rational Focal Point for Project Management

Thank you for your interest in Rational Focal Point for Project Management. This product is part of the next generation Project and Portfolio Management solutions from Rational. It is the result of feedback over the past several years, and feedback from early access customers like you.

In order for us to build and deliver the right product to make you successful, we need more input from you. That is why we are opening up Focal Point for Project Management on Jazz.net. Like we do with other products on Jazz.net, we want you to be able to access early releases, see our plans, and provide input about bugs and enhancements.

Here’s what we’ve done so far:

What is Rational Focal Point for Project Management?

Rational Focal Point for Project Management is the project execution product of the next generation Project & Portfolio Management (PPM) solutions from Rational. It’s a Web-based project and resource management application built on the Jazz Foundation. Rational Focal Point for Project Management helps project managers gain control of their Software and Systems Delivery (SSD) projects by providing the visibility they need. It also provides the central repository for project and program data, and automates the capture of project data to minimize errors. Let’s not forget about resources. This product also helps in tracking and ensuring that the right resources are working on the right projects. “Resources” may not necessarily mean human resources but could be extended to include any type of resource that can be scheduled, for example, a server.

So far, your feedback is what has driven our capabilities for 1.0, which you can see and follow in our release plan.

I am excited about the communication vehicle that Jazz.net provides between us.

Looking forward to working with you all!

Thank you Neil. Looking forward to more future news and Focal Point PM. In particular, the integration with Rational Insight and Rational Focal Point.

    Neil,
The framework and approach look good at first glance. How are you addressing transition for organizations heavily invested in the poor practices of waterfall and MSProject?

    Neil,
any recorded sessions for the product.

Huet> We would continue to support, as you put it, the poor practices of waterfall, and we would support integration with MSP.

Kedar> I hope to be able to upload some recorded demos in the near future.

I would like to see some of how Jazz capabilities for collaboration are being used to augment the governance and control of PPM with the “softer” aspects of PPM that teams will use to self-organize and align to the business objectives. This is a huge shortcoming of typical PPM approaches, as evidenced the continual issues in the space (failures, etc). I am really excited about this.

    Hi,

I was trying to evaluate the early version of RFP but have hit kind of road block at the moment.

I’m already having RTC 2.0 installed on my server which runs on Jazz 2.0.
Can I install RFP on the same instance of JAzz team server or I need some other machine to test RFP ?

  7. Neil Leblanc July 27, 2009 @ 7:21 am

Vivek, We have not yet enabled the installation of project management into a currently existing RTC instance. Can you please contact me.
