Refactoring the Jazz Project

When we began the Jazz Project and opened it to the public last year, we had two goals in mind: we had a vision for a platform on which to build a new generation of collaborative software development tools, and we wanted to work in the open to build a first product on that platform which would demonstrate the vision’s potential. We did the work on both of these under the umbrella of the Jazz Project, and the product focus crystallized and took the shape of Rational Team Concert last spring.  Looking forward, we want to give more equal emphasis to executing on the platform as well as the tools.

To that end, we have begun a “refactoring” of the Jazz Project. We have begun to formally extract the platform into its own project here at jazz.net, the “Jazz Foundation” project. Those of you watching our development repository may have already noticed the presence of this project, and we’re actively moving the components that make up the platform over to this project. The Jazz Foundation project is now open for business, you can see details here on the Development page. This page includes a link to the release plan for the Jazz Foundation 1.0 release, as well as the related release plan for Rational Team Concert 2.0, which will be built on the Jazz Foundation. The Foundation release plan includes a good description of what it is, and especially how it is being extended to support the Jazz Integration Architecture. The Jazz Foundation project has its own Project Management Committee, and will be visible through its dashboards, iteration plans, and work items.

The “Jazz Project” project in the jazz.net repository will be renamed to be the “Rational Team Concert” project to better reflect its focus. Stay tuned for this and other revisions to the jazz.net site to provide better access to the Jazz Foundation, Rational Team Concert, and other upcoming projects and products.
