Clean uninstall of RTC 3.0 RC0 (beta 2)

Claudia Callegari (44449871) | asked Nov 25 '10, 9:43 a.m.
I had previously installed RTC 3.0 RC0 (beta 2) eclipse client on my machine. Now I want to install the gold version, but even if I have uninstalled the beta 2, and rebooted my machine, the installation fails, saying that the installation location contains an older RTC that is not compatible with this installation action, asking me to uninstall that and try again.
But even if I do that, I cannot get rid off the beta 2 version.

Help would be appreaciated.
Thanks

I believe I was able to find what was causing the problem... the GA version of RTC 3.0 Eclipse client seems to be incompatible with another installation of RTC Eclipse client (ie. 2.0.0.2 ifix5).

This is what I did (always via Installation Manager):

1) installed RTC eclipse client 2.0.0.2 ifix5
2) installed RTC eclipse client 3.0 RC 0 (beta 2), using a new package. No problem.
3) uninstalled RTC eclipse client 3.0 RC 0 (beta 2)
4) tried to install RTC eclipse client 3.0 (GA) --> not able to continue installation due to the problem I originally described
5) uninstalled RTC eclipse client 2.0.0.2 ifix5
6) tried to install RTC eclipse client 3.0 (GA), and I noticed the error I got before, went away. Just to make another test, I did not install.
7) installed RTC eclipse client 2.0.0.2 ifix5 again
8) tried to install RTC eclipse client 3.0 (GA) --> not able to continue installation due to the problem I originally described

Note: I used the web installer for 3.0 GA, available from All Downloads, as when i tried to download the RTC-Eclipse-Client-repo-3.0.zip, had problems when trying to add it as repository.

In summary, is it true that RTC eclipse client 3.0 (GA) cannot live with another RTC eclipse client installation on the same machine as supported before? Pls confirm.

Thanks

One thing I noticed with IM is that even after an uninstall, it leaves
around a couple of the top level directories from that install. Once I
manually remove those directories, the IM install could proceed.

Cheers,
Geoff

Geoff, can you guide me exactly to those directories to see if this tip helps me?
Thanks

Geoff,
I think I got what you were talking about. Explaining here what I did in case others need this tip.

Tip1: as I wanted both RTC eclipse clients 2.x and 3.x to be installed on the same machine, I had to use the repository and not the web installer. (Note. Using the web installer I got an error asking me to remove previous RTC instances, and you keep getting that error message unless you uninstall RTC 2.x)

Tip2: once I have downloaded the "RTC-Eclipse-Client-repo-3.0.zip" file, I was not able to use this file "as-is" as a repository for Installation Manager. What I did was to unzip the file and changed the directory structure. Basically, when you unzip the file you have a dir structure like this:
im\repo\rtc-client-offering\offering-repo\...
I moved all the files on that path to a higher level, so now it seems like:
repository.config
repository.xml
atoc folder
features folder
native folder
Offerings folder
plugins folder

Once I did that, I deleted the other dir structure im\repo\...
I created a new zip file with this content, and used this as the repository for Installation Manager. Fortunately it worked fine, and no error message got even if I had RTC 2.x eclipse client installed (I selected to create a new package during the installation process).

Hope this helps,

Thanks Geoff for your tip.

Hi Claudia,

I'm glad that my comment inspired you to try out something that worked,
but you deserve all the credit for this, since my comment was about
something else (:-). In particular, all I was saying was:

When you use IM to install something (say the RTC Eclipse client), one
of the items you specify is the file system directory into which the
files should be installed (e.g. C:\Program Files\IBM\TeamConcert). When
you ask IM to uninstall that client, it removes most of the installed
files/directories, but leaves the directory (e.g. C:\Program
Files\IBM\TeamConcert) there. If you then try to install a new client,
it will say "directory already exists" (or some such error message).
One simple approach is to modify the install destination pathname to
specify a new directory, but an alternative (in my note) is to manually
remove the C:\Program Files\IBM\TeamConcert directory, and then the new
client can be installed in the default directory.

Cheers,
Geoff
