Weekly time report - can I avoid re-invention of the wheel?
Hi,
I'm about to implement a custom report - weekly time report to summarize
time spent on work items on weekly basis.
I was just wandering: can I re-use existing DW snapshots/reports?
I checked out current snapshots and read the description at jazz.net/wiki
and came to a conclusion: the only option would be to implement custom DW
service. Please tell me I'm wrong. Can I customize current DW to add a
column to an existing snapshot?
Regards,
Roman

To be more precise: the report will show the time spent on work items from
all lines for a particular contributor/team member.

Hi Roman,
You can't currently add columns to existing snapshot tables.
1. First and foremost, adding new dimensions to an existing table can
have very serious implications on the table size that might not be
immediately obvious. To take a hypothetical example, adding a User
column to the WI_STATES or WI_CHGS tables could easily inflate the size
of the data warehouse 10-fold.
2. Adding a column is trick because of the question of what to do with
historical data, as well as the fact that some kind of migration would
be required.
I think your best option is, as you suggest, to implement your own data
warehouse snapshot. You can include in your table only the fields that
you need, to conserve space. You might find our WorkItemSnapshotService
a good place to start, although it likely has much more in there than
you would need.
I'd also recommend this good general article on data warehouses and star
schemas:

Hope this helps.
