unable to edit UI sketch (content generation error)
Hi,
We have installed CLM 3.0.1 test server (all applications), deployed Money that Matters, and trying RRC functionality. However I cannot open any User interface sketch, Storyboard, etc.. On Web UI I see:
In conf/server/logs/rm.log I see this error message:
I use RRC 3.0.1, FF 3.6.19 with RRCBrowserAddOn 3.0.1.0_2
Do you have any ideas, what could go wrong, or where to check other logs?
Thanks,
Attila

Hi Attila,
The problem you describe is with the viewing of graphical artifacts, not the ability to edit them. While this might seem to be a minor point, the significance is that viewing graphical artifacts is handled server side by the converter app whereas editing is performed client side using the browser add-on.
So, the key thing to check in this case is actually the state of the converter on the server and not anything related to the client. The most common cause for the error you are encountering is the inability of the server to service graphical requests from the converter app. This typically happens on Linux platforms that have been configured to be headless (console-mode only). If this is your situation, you may find the following technote useful. What you'll need to do is install Xvfb and export DISPLAY to handle the graphics requests. If this does not describe your server configuration, please provide some additional details about your server, and we'll help get the issue resolved for you.

Unfortunately there are more errors.. UI Sketch viewing and editing is working now, but I tried to open a Business Process Diagram (JKE Requirements Process Overview from MTM sample), and I have this error in catalina.out:
Maybe it's related, but I see this also at the beginning of the log:
However, when I click Edit, I can see and edit the whole process.
This installation uses openSUSE 11.4, with RTC/RRC/RQM 3.0.1, Derby for DB and Tomcat for app server (test setup).

It sounds like there may be some other modules missing from your linux configuration, so the trick is figuring out which ones.
As a really simple first check, I would look to see if you have these installed. Note that you didn't mention whether this is a 32 or 64-bit server, so the location may vary between /usr/lib or usr/lib64 as it is on my RHEL server or someplace yet again different since I'm not familiar with the organization of openSUSE. Some of the version info may defer as well.
libXtst.so.6
libstdc++.so.5 (it's important to have .5, .6 will not work)
A slightly more involved check (assuming the above two are present) is to extract libswt-pi-gtk-3557.so from the appropriate jar below (again, depending on whether you are 32 or 64-bit):
org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.x86_3.5.2.v3557f.jar
org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.x86_64_3.5.2.v3557f.jar
You would find these jars in a location like the following (again, your location may vary):
/opt/IBM/JazzTeamServer/server/tomcat/webapps/converter/WEB-INF/eclipse/plugins
Once you have the .so file extracted, execute:
ldd libswt-pi-gtk-3557.so
and see if it reports any missing dependencies.

libXtst.so.6
libstdc++.so.5 (it's important to have .5, .6 will not work)
We have an x64 installation, and usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.5 was missing, only libstdc++.so.6 was present. I installed missing libstdc++ and now everything seems to work fine (unfortunately today I don't have too much time to test it, but all types of content I could find was generated properly).
Nevertheless I ran ldd libswt-pi-gtk-3557.so and found one missing dependecy, linux-vdso.so.1:

Also, can you point me to a documentation about these prerequisites for RRC? Just in case something is still missing, I'd like to find it out before starting evaluation and have users complaining. Btw I still see 'Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "localhost:1.0"' in catalina.out, can it cause problems in the future?
Thanks for your help once again.
Best regards,
Attila
Hi Attila,
Congrats! I think you're all good.
No need to worry about linux-vdso.so.1. What you were really looking for are any entries that would have said "not found".
I believe the compatibility library for libstdc++ was the ticket. Apparently the .6 version doesn't play nice with the JRE and causes problems within AWT. We only recently stumbled across this issue, and in our investigation, found this IBM Support document (and a couple of others like it):
https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21297575
Unfortunately it seems some linux installations will have .5 installed while others just have .6, so it's on our "hit list" of things to check for when people encounter a problem with the converter.
The only thing we've really documented as a "pre-req" is from the original technote I provided about installing Xvfb. After that, it get's into odd cases such as the one you just encountered, or I've seen cases where some systems didn't have libXtst (which in your case was there). I did put together a slide for our support team of some commons things to check when having issues with the converter, and I could look into publishing that on jazz.net, but I find it's typically best that we interact with users directly to identify these problems. For example, I also have scripts/class files that test the basic ability of SWT and AWT to be run on the server. The latter would likely have detected your problem. But these require some manual tweaking based on your installation.
At this point, what I can say is you need this:
- Gtk+ 2.2.1 and it's dependencies
- compat-libstdc++
- libXtst.so.6
- Xvfb (if not running a desktop like Gnome) and export DISPLAY (per the prior technote)
But it seems we always find something else as no two linux servers ever seem to be alike. ;)

Hi Stef,
Oh yes, the wonders of different flavours and installations of Linux systems :) Since our production server is an exact copy of this test server, I think we won't have any problem with installing and using RRC if we decide to use it (we already use RTC for almost two years).
Thanks for your help and the detailed explanation!
Best regards,
Attila

Hi - I'm getting the following msg when attempting to access a User interface sketch artifact in RRC 3.0.1:
The requested content could not be generated.
IDCRRRW8010E A server error prevented the generation of the content. Refresh your browser to generate the content again. If the problem persists, there might be an issue with the server. Ask your administrator to check the server status.
I'm using FF 3.6.21 version - tried to get the RRCBrowserAddOn but couldn't find any.
Can you please advise on what to do to get the Artifact content displayed properly?
Thanks!

Hi Maria,
Unfortunately a number of underlying issues can result in that particular error message. The bottom line is that the converter application running on the server is not able to provide a graphical rendering of your artifact. This is totally unrelated to the RRCBrowserAddOn which is used strictly for the purposes of editing such artifacts.
In order to assist you with this problem, please provide some details about the server you are using. The most common cause of this issue is that the server is a linux-based, headless (console mode) configuration that does not have the necessary graphical components to serve up the rendering and can typically be resolved following the steps from this technote:
https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?q1=RN2.0.0.1&rs=3499&uid=swg21410023&cs=utf-8&lang=en&loc=en_US
The technote was originally written for the 2.x release but the principle still applies in 3.0.1. But as I said, there are several issues that can lead to this error and the technote may just be the first step in resolving it.

Comments
we just upgraded to RRC 4.0 and are still seeing this error. We are running Windows not Linux in headless mode. Is anyone else seeing this issue? We have had a PMR outstanding for way too long without resolution. Any ideas from the user community is appreciated.
We resolved this problem internally by diffing against a clean 4.0.0.1 install. The underlying issue was with the Connector settings in the server.xml file.
The following attributes were changed FROM:
algorithm="Ibmx509"
sslProtocol="TLS"
TO:
algorithm="${jazz.connector.algorithm}"
sslProtocol="${jazz.connector.sslProtocol}"
I am not sure how we ended up the settings, but that was the root cause.
