Feasibility of transferring SQL data to an Oracle database through an external software solution.

Venkatesh Bhat (29646) | asked Jul 31, 1:34 a.m.
We are in the process of migrating the ELM 7.0.2 applications database from SQL to Oracle as part of the ELM 7.0.3 upgrade initiative. The database sizes for CCM1 and CCM2 are approximately 4TB and 1TB, respectively, with an estimated migration duration of 4 to 5 days. However, our organization has a policy that restricts downtime to a maximum of 2 days. After discussions with the DBA team, we have determined that we can utilize "Golden Gate" to facilitate the migration from SQL to Oracle, allowing us to capture the delta changes during the transition. The DBA team has also provided a URL that outlines the step-by-step procedure for this process.

The DBA team seeks confirmation from IBM development regarding the possibility of employing external tools such as "Golden Gate" for the migration and configuring the applications to minimize downtime. Please reach out if any clarifications are needed.

This is a user forum and not IBM ELM support. There is no way to get any confirmation for your approach in this forum.

However, for all I know, you approach is not supported and likely not going to be successful.

The only documented way to migrate between databases can be found in the product help and involves an export of the data and an import of the data. https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/engineering-lifecycle-management-suite/lifecycle-management/7.0.3?topic=database-migrating-databases

There has been some effort to make the process of exporting and importing faster and more efficient in the recent releases. However, obviously, it will take the time it will take to do the migration.

If you need more information on this, I would suggest to get in contact with support. There are possibilities to arrange test migrations and having support available standby in case of issues.

Adding to Ralph's answer: there are repotools commands available for this (exportConcurrent, importConcurrent, compare). The exception is the data warehouse, for which standard database migration tooling can be used. As he wrote: see the ELM documentation and if you need more information, ask IBM Support.
