Connecting to RTC from Visual Studio

I'm trying to connect to RTC from Visual Studio but the connection keeps trying to log onto the instance by attaching the instance name as part of the email address.  So if I enter John.Doe, it shows that it can't connect and displays the email address of john.doe@sandbox.com even though John.Doe might have another email address.  Do I have a setting incorrect?

This is just how the connection is displayed - it's not an email address. For example, if I set my connection name as "MyRTC", when I log in, it just shows "donald@MyRTC". If you have not logged in, it would show "<unknown>@sanbox.com" in your case.

So if that's not the issue, than what else can i look at that's causing my issue?  I know I've got the correct user id and password?

Can you give the exact error message that you get when not able to log in?
