Can I install Installation Manager and Build Forge Console on Linux without root?

The documentation says I need to install IM and BF 7.1.3.3 as root in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4, however our environment does not allow this. Can we install as sudo or under a user? It seems like the documentation insists we use root, but not sure why.
