I am getting 'CRJAZ0109I Communications error', when i try to open the project area through RTC thick client.

do you have access to the server logs? If so, can you paste the full stack trace? See http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/clmhelp/v4r0/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.rational.clm.doc%2Ftopics%2Fc_logfiles_loc.html for help finding the server logs.
