Inline plan editing of custom work item attributes

 Hi,

I've successfully created a few custom Work Item attributes and I can see them in some plan views.
I want to make those attributes editable inline right in the plan when using the Eclipse client.

However, it seems that only attributes of type Enumeration support this.  When you mouse over those attributes in the plan, you can click to get a dropdown where you choose the appropriate enumeration value right in the plan.

But if the custom attribute is a String or a Contributor type, then it seems impossible to make it editable inline to me.  The whole thing is actually quite confusing, since I don't even really know which type of editor I am dealing with.  The documentation seems extraordinarily brief and very ambiguous.  Is this the "Inline Work Item Editor" or the "Plan Editor Preview", or what?

Moreover, I don't see how those Editor Presentations have anything to do with the Plan View whatsoever.  For example, if you define an Editor Presentation for a given work item's "Plan Editor Preview", what does this have to do with the actual plan view.  When you are looking at a plan view, you can edit it and change the "View Layout", specifying which attributes are shown and in what order.  What does this have to do with the corresponding Editor Presentation that also defines a set of attributes in a specific order, and seems to be totally independent.  There must be something fundamental here that I am missing.

But I really just want to make custom work item attributes of types other than Enumeration editable inline right inside of a Plan without going to any other screen/window.

Thanks

"Plan Editor Preview" is the layout to which the new attribute needs to be added.
Once this is done you from the plan Web UI editor you can open this editor from the Action menu without navigating out of the plan editor.

What if I want to use the Eclipse client to do the inline editing and not the Web UI?

And actually I am talking about true inline editing. Even if I did want to use the Web UI instead of Eclipse, the Action menu's "Edit Work Item" option just brings up a popup editor for the work item, but that is not inline. It is a popup. It's true that I don't have to navigate away from the plan. So to be very clear, to me, "inline" means editing the attributes of a work item directly from the plan. This works fine for some attributes, seemingly the Enumerations. I can click on one of those attributes as it appears in the plan and get a dropdown menu to select a different value. It takes only 2 clicks. One click to open the dropdown, and one to select a new value. I am looking for a way to do this for non-enumerations (e.g. Contributor type attributes) that also only takes 2 clicks, and does not visually obscure the other attributes of that work item or the plan except for rendering a widget to perform the edit (e.g. a dropdown). I don't want a popup that covers basically the whole page with another rendering of the entire work item in fully editable form.

Hi Chris, I have the same question as yours, did you get the solution?
