Is there a way to manually or automatically subscribe a team or multiple people to a work item type so they receive email notifications when there are updates?

Yes, you can drag a team area from the "Team Artifacts" view into the quick information area of the work item to subscribe the entire team on the work item.

Note that all members of a project area stay informed on changes for work items in this area via the event feed "My Teams in <name> Project".

I assume that there is no way of doing this from the web interface then?

Another trick I use, is to create folders under favorites in the team
artifacts view. You can draf/drop users into these folders, and then use
that as groups for work item approvals or subscribers also using drag/drop.
