[non technical] Open source or Open commercial for RTC

Hi, All,

I know Jazz is open commercial in my mind. It let us participate the development by early use it. Also, it can let us know the progress of project and submit our ideas.

But, I find we can download the source code from the website now. Does it mean the project is an open source project? If someone modify the source code and rebuild it, is it allowed?

This is a very good question!

Jazz is being developed using a process called "Open Commercial Software Develompment." This is not to be confused with open source development. We use the term "open" to refer to the transparent and the collaborative nature of the project. All the development takes place openly and publicly at Jazz.net. You can view plans and progress and interact directly with the various members of the Jazz team. Another important element of this transparency is making the source code available. However the license under which we make the source available and accept any contributions, is NOT an open source license. If you read the license you'll see that you can modify the source code for your own internal use however you may not redistribute any part of the software including the source and your modifications.

So to answer to your specific question, you can modify the source and rebuild it for your own internal use but you can't give that modified source (or least the parts of it that are the original code) or the new build, to anyone else. If you agreed to the license on behalf of your company, that means you can't give the code to anyone outside of your company.

I hope that answers your question.
