Creating a new artifact type

David Davies (20612713) | asked Mar 29 '11, 5:44 a.m.
Hi guys

Currently using 2.0.2 with RTC 3.0.

Is there anyway to create a new artifact type in RRC??? I would like to create one for enhancements / change requests and although this is very simple in RTC I can't see anyway of doing it in RRC.

Many thanks

David

Hi David,

Please see this RRC help for creating artifacts from the client. It requires admin role on the RRC project for the user. It will then show the admin tab.

Hi there

Sorry, I should have worded my question better. I know how to create an existing artifact using the artifact types included ( use case, requirement etc). What I'd like to do is create a new type of artifact and then have it show in the drop-down list of Create Artifact. In the same way you can create new types of work item in Team Concert.

cheers

David

Hi David,

In V2 the artifact types, like requirement, use case, are system defined. What you can do is assign different attribute groups, to each type and then save an artifact template that contains this artifact with the specific set of attribute groups. This artifact template can then be used during the creation of artifacts.

To create attribute groups

1. From the RRC client, when you open a project do you see an admin tab (after Artifacts, Requirements, Collections)?
- if not then you will need to have administrator privileges for the project area on the jazz server.
- to manage the project areas it will be some URL like this https://:9443/jazz/admin#action=com.ibm.team.process.manageProjectAreas
- ensure that the process role for your user includes "Administrator" role

2. And then from the client follow the instructions in the help for "Creating and modifying attribute groups"

Is our intention to allow any artifact types to be created, as can be seen in this older (June 7th, 2010) new and noteworthy post

Hi Robin

Thanks for the info. I have just installed Beta3 and see that the functionality is there to create new artifact types - great news. I can find any documentation on this area yet, but do you know how you could define some artifact types and copy them to another project - I am guessing it has something to do with the project templates part..??

Many thanks again

David

OK, I've done a bit of digging and playing and the template stuff looks good. I created a project template which was available to use from withing the RM server itself when creating a new project. However, when I went into the lifecycle server and created a lifecycle project, my new template did not appear as an option against RM.... IS that expected or a bug?

Thanks

David

In RRC there is only 1 JTS Process Template, and the project templates are created from within the RRC Project Dashboard admin menu, as you have found. So create the RM project, then link it to the other application projects using LPA.

What you have described is expected, in Beta 3, now is this a bug or should there be improvements that is another question. I would suggest raising a work item, describing your business problem.

We will document how to create custom LPA templates to use custom project templates.
