hotspot to notspot

This is starting to bug me...
When I am looking at a list of my work items, the number and the description are underlined and visually indicate that they are hotspots. Indeed, the mouse pointer changes from pointer to a hand when you hover over them. Clicking on them correctly opens the document.
But there are times when I am in another window and I just want for the browser window to regain focus, so I click on part of the RTC display where it is seemingly not a hotspot, usually to the right of the summary column. But it still opens the document! I almost always have to return back to the list. Is there a way to reduce the area that is used as a hotspot :?:
