or is it just the Microsoft packages that work ... ?

The current import utilities for Word & Excel documents work with Microsoft Office only.

I created Enhancement 36911: Provide the functionality of RQMExcelWordImporter without the need for a Microsoft Office license and subscribed you to it. Please review and add your comments and/or modify the description if I did not accurately capture your business requirement.
