CQConnector - creating new synchronisation rules

I configured and started the ClearQuest gateway. When creating new synchronisation rules I was expecting to be able to select a ClearQuest record type from the configured schema connection, but the dropdown for the externaltype field is empty - have I missed a step or just misinterpreted how this feature works?

Did you create an external repository connection to the CQ gateway whose connection info would be the url to the CQ gateway, http://<CQ Gateway machine>:8081/InteropGateway/InteropServlet for example?

No I must have missed that step. I assume this is documented in the help for the CQCoonnector feature.
