Need help installing RQM Custom Reporting

Rick Lee (611) | asked Sep 25 '09, 2:52 p.m.
We currently have a dedicated Microsoft SQL server that has the RTC and RQM databases on it. We also have a dedicated Windows server for the RTC application (Tomcat) and a dedicated Windows RQM server.

What wed like to accomplish is use SQL Server for all Custom Reporting databases, and have them all on the current dedicated SQL server. Any non SQL applications wed like to have on the dedicated RQM server.

I'm not finding any installation documentation addressing this scenario.

Hi Rick,
There's documentation here for the DW:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/rqmhelp/v2r0/topic/com.ibm.rational.test.qm.reporting.doc/topics/t_postreq_datawarehouse_msqlserv.html
And here for the report server:

Hi John,

We still have a few questions about this. I just came on board as the Configuration Manager and I am trying to get up to speed on using RTC and RQM. I have been using ClearCase (base and UCM) for over 10 years and I see that I have quite a bit to learn about RTC/RQM. So, I apologize up front for any questions that may appear to be dumb ones. I can tell you that RTC looks very similar to Team Foundation Server which I used at a previous company.

First,

Do we need to install IBM Cognos 8 in addition to RQM or is it included in RQM?

Second,

I saw another question in the forum regarding Custom Reporting and "data warehouse model" and "live data model" were mentioned. The difference may be obvious just from the names, but can you give us some advice regarding either of them?

This is the link to the question:

http://jazz.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6126&highlight=cognos

Third,

I am going over the instructions in the links that you supplied earlier with the IT support person who did the installation and he said that after he installed the DW, the folders mentioned in the link were not on the system. So, we may need to go over the instructions again.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

-Walter

Hello Walter,
RQM ships with a "stripped down" version of reporting called "Rational Custom Reporting". The most notable limitation of RCR is that it can only report on data from the RQM data source, not other data sources (i.e. RTC, your own custom data source).

Datawarehousing runs periodically (you set the schedule) and pulls data from RQM into the report datawarehouse. When you run a DW report, it reads whatever is in the DW to generate the report. The downside is that data changed since the last sync will not be present in the report. The upside is that it runs fast.

Live datasources are what they sound like - the data is pulled from RQM in real time. The upside is that you get the most up to date data available. The downside is that it can bog down the RQM server.

We recommend using the DW based reports unless you have a very specific need to do otherwise.

John

Hi John,

Thanks for the clarification. Good to know how RCR works with RQM and how we can get another data source to work with it. As I mentioned before, I come from places where we used ClearCase. This may be ClearCase, but it has been totally changed and now I have to learn RTC, from the beginning.

Which brings us back to to the original post (by rickwho). We have not been able to setup the DW so that it interacts with RQM. I work with him and he told me that the SQL server database that we want to run Custom Reports on is on a different server than the one that hosts the RQM qnd RTC applications. RQM and RTC currently use this SQL server for their respective databases. This sounds like the scenario that you describe in your reply to me.

So, it looks like we need to get past the installation issue that has been a problem since September. I saw another post on this forum, from someone at Tellabs, which described running into the same situation that we are seeing. They believe that there is a problem with the first 2 steps of the installation instructions that are in the link that you referred rickwho to. Specifically, steps 1 and 2 can't be done in their current sequence. Sort of like a Catch-22. You can't perform step 1 without step 2 already being done. They plan to resolve it by asking IBM to send an engineer on site to help them setup Custom Reporting.

This is the link to that discussion:

Thank you for your help with this,

-Walter

It seems like the instructions included in the RQM 2.0.0.1 help and even in the installation screens themselves are not correct. Is there a version of the instructions that use all the right screen names. I am also trying to install the reporting and content store on one server (different from the DW) and the options presented do not describe my case.

We recently upgraded to RQM v2.0.1 and it appears that "Custom Reporting" is now handled by IBM Cognos. Is this correct?

Specifically, when I went into RQM Help and went to "Reports"->"Custom Reporting", the page that was displayed had links to IBM Cognos. It appears that we will need to install something called "IBM Cognos Report Studio".

Please advise us further if this is the way we need to move forward in order to get "Custom Reporting" for RQM.

Thanks,

-Walter
