If I add a custom attribute "Test Lead" of type contributor, can the user selected under this attribute gets a mail notifiaction?

We are creating a new workitem to track a specific request raised by project teams and want and automatic mail notification goes to a test lead. We have added a custom attribute called test lead which is of type contributor, how can we enable an automatic mail notification for this attribute?

Without Java Server based extensions you won't get any any e-mail notification. The built in notification only works for the subscribed users or for mentions.
