Question regarding Rational Asset Manager uploads

Rational Asset Manager version 7.5.2.4.  Running on WAS 8.5.5.9

We recently uploaded a 30GB file into RAM. After upload was complete, we clicked the update button and the content began processing on the server. During this time we monitored the drive that contains the (index, local, persist) directories. We noticed the amount of available storage decreased drastically. For example, while processing the 30GB file, the amount of available storage on the drive decreased by 500GB!!

Is there something that is done during file processing that consumes 10 times the amount of data than the file upload size?
