I am trying to create work items in an already existing team area, but I don't want to affect the burn down chart of the already existing team.

Burn down and burn up look for the work items for a team planned for a specific iteration. So if you enter work items they only appear based on filed against and planned for. If you pick the backlog for planned for for example you should be fine.
