Work Item "Plan For" Menu

Chris Barlock (18814738) | asked Jan 23 '09, 2:41 p.m.
If you right-click on a work item, one of the elements on the menu is "Plan for" to select a target iteration. Can this menu be customized or reset? One of the iterations I want to use (a lot at the moment) is not on this list, so I have to open each work item, change the iteration, save and close the item. Very tedious...

Hello cbarlock,

Please make sure the iterations you want to plan for have a release planned.
Only those current and future iterations that have this item marked are presented
as choices to plan for.

This also enables you to have iterations underneath the one you plan for
that can be used as hooks to customize the process.

They all have releases planned -- and I can select from any of the

iterations if I open each work item. But, my question is about the
right-click menu, where the "Plan for" selections are more
limited. Can I control what is on this list?

The only way I know of to influence this is that iterations with no release
planned for are not selectable in this dialog. Plus Iterations that are already
completed are not presented here.

I have not found any preferences or other options. We have to wait for someone
of the agile planning team responds.

I'd also like to know how the Plan For context menu is populated.
Without a More... option, if the iteration you need to move to is not
listed, you can't use the Plan For context menu.

I am also having this issue.

When I right click on a group of tasks, it gives me a submenu "Plan for", which lists some plan backlogs. It lists the current sprint and a future release backlog, but not the current release backlog. Our current release backlog is planned for release, and the current date is well within the start and end dates.

Hello nilbus,

you might want to check if the checkbox "A release is sheduled for this iteration"
is checked on the backlog iteration. You can only plan for those who have
it checked.
The reason is, you can have sub iterations within an iteration with different
process configurations e.g. require a review in en endgame iteration during
some milestone but not in the development part of the iteration.

When I had those issues it was usually the checkbox.

Hi all,

I have the same issue. See below:

We have plans for each of the following releases and iterations. For each of the lines below, a plan exists and a release is scheduled (checkbox is checked). All releases and iterations have defined start/end dates.

our timelines are as follows:

project backlog ( no start and end defined)

release 1 - 1/18/10 - 4/9/10
Iteration 1 -(completed) 1/18/10 - 2/5/10
iteration 2 -(completed) 2/8/10 - 2/26/10
iteration 3 -(completed) 3/1/10 - 3/19/10
iteration 4 -(completed) 3/22/10 - 4/9/10

release 2 - 4/12/10 - 7/2/10
iteration 5 - 4/12/10 - 4/30/10 current iteration, today is 4/13/10
iteration 6 - 5/3/10 - 5/21/10
iteration 7 - 5/24/10 - 6/11/10
iteration 8 - 6/14/10 - 7/2/10

release 3 - no date defined
iteration 9 - no date defined

Question 1:
If I right click on an item in the PROJECT BACKLOG, planned for shows only 5 available options: Iteration 5, 6, 8 and project backlog and no target iteration. Why? Anything startign with iteration 5 is future at this point, so they all should be available.

Question 2:
If I right click on a story in ITERATION 5 (our current iteration), then planned for sub menu has 4 available options: iteration 5, 6, 8 and no target iteration. Why would iteration 7 be not listed?

Question 3:
I want to be able to mark an item for a future release, but I don't necessarily know which iteration within that release. We have a release plan created. How can I see release listed as an option?

Question 4:
is there a way to customize the number of options displayed?

thanks very much

Aysim

Hi,

I would suggest to create a work item to get it analyzed. Please provide more details e.g. screenshots.

I haven't seen what you describe. Issues where usually as stated above. Also I have seen issues with not unique iteration ID's. I have seen several occurance of the same iteration name because the display name was duplicated also.

For each Timeline you can specify a backlog iteration that is used to hold and organize things that you don't know when to plan yet. This is done in the planning section of the Process Customization.
