There is a direct integration into visual studio, that you should use with the supported versions of it. There is also an MS-SCC Interface that you can download and try out with older tools, that only support this interface.
Finally there s the Windows schell integration for users that should be able to work with SCM data but don't need to use an IDE. The web client also provides access to SCM and other data to display out of an IDE.

Hi Sean, there is an integration with Rational Rhapsody and RTC which relies on this portion of the product for source control. Other Windows based products can leverage this as well providing they understand this specification.
You do not need to install the msscci client separately in order to configure the RTC\VS integration.
