Installing DOORS NG 4.0.1 with DOORS 9 Licences

Alastair Beadle (19411218) | asked Jan 08 '13, 6:39 a.m.

We have DOORS 9 (currently running 9.3 client) and are interested in evaluating DOORS NG to see if migration is a good idea for us yet (I understand we may need to upgrade to 9.5 to migrate modules).

I beleive that we can run DOORS NG on our DOORS 9 licences. However DOORS NG does not appear to be available from our Passport Advantage login (the latest version available for download there is DOOR 9.5) and the download of DOORS NG 4.0.1 on the Jazz website appears to be an evaluation copy only.

Can someone advise on why DOORS NG is not available to me on Passport Advantage or whether the Jazz 'evaluation' download can later be used to link to our existining DOORS 9 licences?

For the IBM answer see the technote "How to generate Rational DOORS Next Generation license keys from License Key Center website" - and the instructions in the Jazz Keys ZIP file downloaded  from License Key Center.

Hi Pekka,

Thanks for the info. That is the kind of information I am after - but unfortunately it does not seem to work for me.

If I use 'Get Keys' as instructed there is no 'Next' button to press - I think because I have already 'got' those keys for my DOORS 9 installation. I don't think I should return them as we want to continue using DOORS 9.

If I use 'View Keys' I can get as far as seeing all the keys (the original licences and the S&S updates) but I only have a 'download' button and that just gives me a DOORS 9 'licence.dat' file. There is no 'generate' button on that page.

Yes, your purchase of DOORS 9.3 entitles you to use DOORS Next Generation (assuming you have active DOORS subscription and support).

Through your Passport Advantage account you can download the DOORS NG installer, which includes evaluation licenses for DOORS NG (and RTC and RQM). You can download the same bits from .

Note that the actual license key for DOORS NG is different from DOORS 9, so you need to get the DOORS NG license key from the Rational License Key Center (LKC).

In the LKC, under DOORS, get a Jazz activation kit for DOORS NG, then install it into the DOORS NG server (all Jazz licensing is server-side). This will give you non-expiring DOORS NG licenses of the same type (floating etc) as your DOORS 9 licenses).

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the info - we do have active DOORS S&S so we should be OK.

Curiously I don't see DOORS NG on my Passport Advantage account - I see DOORS 9.5, some older versions, some other IBM products that we have licences for - but nothing NG. But if the Jazz site download gives me everything I need that is fine.

I think I may have some issues with the LKC as well though - following Pekka's link above, if I follow those instructions I come to a dead end.

I think this is getting to the stage where I need to raise a ticket to resolve the technical issues.

Thanks for your help.

For information, the reason I could not see the Jazz installation kits on the Licence Key Centre is that I had previously downloaded the DOORS 9 licence keys at DOORS version 9.4 - I needed to return those licences keys and reaqcuire them for DOORS 9.5 and was then be able to see and download the Jazz licence kit.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties. FYI since DOORS NG is part of DOORS 9, in Passport Advantage you will find DOORS NG as an e-Assembly of DOORS 9.5.  But it's just as easy (or easier?) to get it here on
