Tutorial: Consume work items and plans with a client?

I'm looking for a tutorial that described step-by-step how I can consume, change and create work items and plans. Is there such a tutorial available? Or if not, can somebody point me to the appropriate references?

I already found some but there are so many different references that I don't know which are the correct ones.
