How to customize print PDF reports?

Edward Chang (61) | asked Aug 02 '10, 2:26 p.m.
Hi,

I was wondering if there's a way to customize the print pdf reports for "full size" reports in Rational Quality Manager. For example, I want to cut "Individual Step Details" in the Execution Result section from the pdf report. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks for the help!

Edward,

Sorry, there is no way to customize PDF reports. If you have need to create your own PDF documents you may want to look into using RPE which gives you much more flexibility.

I'm curious though, why do you want to leave the individual step results out of the Execution Result PDF?

Mike,

Thanks for giving me a definite answer. I've been googling and trolling the forums and I got a feeling there was not a definite way of doing it.

I will look into RPE to see if that's what we need.

We're trying to shorten the reports to give our clients for review. Some of the information given in the full view report seems redundant and does not need to be, for example, 7 pages long. "Individual Steps" was just an example I was throwing out there to help you guys better understand my question.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Edward,

Ok. I hope that RPE is able to help you.

I'll keep your use case in mind as I'm currently in the middle of reworking some of the PDF functionality for 3.0. I can't promise there will be any change in the current behavior...but I'm always interested to hear how the PDFs are actually being used so I can point us in the right direction when we get a chance to make some improvements.

Well Mike,

We have had some issues with getting RPE and RQM accurately working together. We have upgraded to 2.0.1 of RQM, but have not retried this connection.

We have test groups that do have different PDFs that they have to create for:

1. Their auditors
2. The system engineers (analysts)
3. Customers
4. Technical Documentation (for Release Notes)
5. The "next" testing group that they pass their results to.

So they have varying needs on what is created.

RPE was not developed with RQM in mind, and likewise, RQM's REST API was not developed with RPE in mind as a consumer. Because of this there are definitely some rough spots you need to work through to get what you want when using RPE to print from RQM. Especially for the not-so simple documents you might want to create.

The good news is that in the future we intend to completely replace our PDF generation engine (currently based on Apache FOP) with a new engine based on RPE. Because of this effort we've been doing all the same kinds of things a customer might do when creating a document using RPE and we've been learning from that experience.

We are working very closely with the RPE team to make improvements on both the RQM side and the RPE side to make this integration as solid as can be. The first wave of these improvements will be seen in RQM 3.0, but there is still plenty to improve on after that, and we certainly will.

I will try to find you some work items to follow. Stay tuned.
