For documents published using the "Document Style Report" interface, is there way to pull attributes from the module and populate the publsihing template variables prior to generating the doument to present those variables to the person generating the document?

i.e. if we have an atribute "Document Number" I have a variable in the template that's external. I know how to fill this variable at "Publish time" during generation which is my current method, but I'd like to present those values in the web interface before publishing. Is that possible?
