What do XDC files do?

Can I get a quick summary of what XDC files are doing exactly? I'm super green to CLM applications, but from my understanding of them: XDC files map the CLM REST API's xml response data to database queries exposed as a system level ODBC driver.  This is in regards to data collection jobs (ETLs).

However, after doing some research I ran across some information stating that XDC files created for Insight/Data Manager are only used in 4.0.6 and below, before DCC made stock CLM ETLs via Data Manager obsolete.

So is there any reason for them in version 6.0.3? And would you necessarily need XDC files if you are using Data Collection Component?

Thank you

Hi Lexi -
Your understanding is correct, and with 6.0.3 you definitely would not need XDC files if you're using DCC (which you definitely should be).

Thank you for your response. I have another follow up question that you may or may not know: so if I do not need the XDC files, would I need to replace them? What I mean is that if they are mapping xml response data, in order to still continue getting that data, would I need some other way to map it (without using XDC)?

I hope that made sense...?

Thank you

DCC has its own mapping files within the tool.  You wouldn't have to deal with them unless you're looking to customize them  (which for CLM really usually isn't necessary), so you can pretty much go ahead and use DCC, and be thankful you have DCC instead of the old ETL's  ;)

Great! So if we are customizing them, then we'd have to replace them somehow...? Our ETL jobs from DCC are .ttl files, can we just replace the XDC files as .ttl files?

(And yes, DCC is much appreciated :D )

Or, replacing the XDC files by making them their own data collection job? If that makes sense?

You'll want to refer to this page for customizing DCC:  https://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/DataCollectionCustomizationUsingDCC

Ok, thank you. This leads me to my final question, and you've been a big help: so based off this document, it appears that we'd make a data collection job and rewrite the XDC file as the mapping file described in this document?

Thank you so much.

Yes, I believe you follow this document and it should do what you need.  Keep in mind, I'm a customer too and I haven't actually done any of this, so maybe one of the development/support team can chime in with anything else  :)

 Nonetheless, this has been great!
