Actual Start Date on task in Formal Template not updated

We have observed the below behaviour in the Formal Template:

Actual Start Date is set once a task state changes to In progress. However, if a task is moved back to New state (if it is allowed by a workflow) and then back to In progress state, the original Actual Start Date appears again (so it is not updated). And there seems to be no way to change Actual Start Date in case, say, a task was initiated by mistake. This behaviour is not practically feasible.

Can anyone suggest a feasible workaround to this problem?
