RQM 2.0 - Adding a New Environment Type

Brian Lahaie (1081514) | asked Jul 30 '09, 5:20 p.m.
I just downloaded and installed RQM 2.0 Express.

How can I add an environment type of "Device" to a test plan in RQM 2.0?

By default only the environment types of "Application Server", "Browsers", "CPU", "Database", OS, "ManagementAgent", and "TestAdapater" are available.

Login to RQM with admin privileges. Goto Admin > System Properties > Lab Resources Properties. You can add new Type here.
Next goto Admin > System Properties > Test Plan Environment Types select the type you want to add and then click on set type.

Here are the steps to make a new type appears in the test plan's environment types:

1) Create the new type (Device) and its values.
a) Go to Admin->System Properties, select 'Lab Resource Properties' tab
b) Click 'New' in the first panel (the root types) and enter 'Device' in the new slot
c) Select the new type and create its sub-type values in the next panel
d) Please note that the values can be hierarchical. Created sub types can have its sub types, etc.
e) Important - The new type must have sub-type values to be shown in the test plan types.

2) Create an attribute on the 'Machine' type that uses this new type
a) Select the 'Machine' type, click 'Edit Attributes' (on the panel toolbar, or right click on context menu)
b) In the edit attributes dialog, click 'Add'.
c) Enter a name for the new attribute
d) Set the new attribute's 'Data type' to be 'Type', or 'Multiple Values Type'
e) Select 'Device' in the 'Value' column.
f) Click 'Ok'

3) Commit the added new type
a) Click 'Save'.
b) Logout and log back in the see the new committed changes

4) Add the new type to the Test Plan's types
a) Go to Admin->System Properties, select 'Test Plan Environment Types' tab
b) You will see the new type appears in the Type panel.
c) Select 'Device' and click 'Set Type' (or if you want individual specific device types to be shown separately in the test plan types, do 'Set Type' on the Device's sub types.)
d) You can enter a different display name for 'Device' if desire.

5) Commit the test plan's new type
a) Click 'Save'
b) Logout and log back in the see the new committed changes

6) Go to Test Plan's test environment section, you will see the new type being selectable.

Lam, thank you for providing the steps to add a new environment type.

I have not tried this yet, although I do plan to do it today.

Also, have you seen this defect? It looks like there might be issues with RQM 2.0 being able to add an environment type.

Sure, no problem. The mentioned defect is on interim builds post 2.0 GA. The GA version should work just fine.

Thanks.
