 Is there any way to see the time it takes to make a save?

 There is a dashboard widget to briefly look at network and database performance, but I don't think there is something like metronome.

You can use the firefox, chrome, internet explorer web tools to look at the network traffic coming from the page. You should be able to track the save request and how long it takes.

In firefox and chrome, you can bring up the web tools using ctrl-shift-i (Cmd-Alt-I on Mac). Usually there is a network tab where you can see all of the http/https requests originating from the page.
