Work items stored in Jazz repository rather than project are

In the ppt file of "jazz workshop", it is said that "all work items are stored in the Jazz repository", why they are
not stored in the project area? What's the difference? Thanks very much! :)
I may be completely wrong here - but what I think the material is trying to say is that the work items are stored in the underlying database (jazz repository) rather than on the file system somewhere.
I usually see the term "project area" referring to the folder structure in the Team Artifact view in the Eclipse client. This does have a folder called Work Items for convenience.
Does that make sense?
