How does RTC user defined sorting work on a WBS view?

I was reviewing this help page trying to understand user defined sorting works.

 https://smard1-dm:9443/clmhelp/index.jsp?re=1&topic=/com.ibm.team.apt.doc/topics/t_rank_work_items_web.html&scope=null

I'd like to utilize a custom attribute for sorting work items.   It seems the plans allows for this, but I can't figure out how to define the user define attribute and use it for this type of sorting. Example...Customer wants to sort work items in a plan by a custom attribute (that is not an enumeration).
Can user defined sorting accomplish this task? If so...How?

You posted an internal link so I can tell which version of RTC you are using. Judging by the URL, you're looking at the document about ranking work items in the web client.

I do not have the impression that custom attributes can be used in ranking though. Which part of the document are you referring to?

Sorting and ranking are two different things.
You can select the attribute for the old ranking (rank relative to an enumeration value) in the Process configuration>Project Configuration>Configuration Data>Planning>Plan Attributes. this is a project area wide selection. It only works on enumeration attributes as far as I can tell.

See https://jazz.net/library/article/1364 and https://jazz.net/downloads/rational-team-concert/releases/4.0.5?p=news for how ranking works. I am not aware that you can use a custom attribute for the integer based ranking.

As far as I am aware there is no option to select the sorting (view option) with custom attributes.

For user defined sorting, I was able to find the following references:

https://jazz.net/forum/questions/83464/how-does-sortinguser-defined-within-a-plan-view-work and https://jazz.net/library/article/197 . I have no experience with user defined sorting myself.
