Maintaining version of artefacts

A project baseline captures an entire requirement project at a specific moment in time.
If you double click an artifact in a baseline, you can view the artifact history. In my understanding, the project baseline and artifact history are in different dimensions, and do not affect each other. There is nothing really to be maintained.
