how do you enable a new field on previous work items?

we are having a few things happening.  We have a master project that we make all changes to the configurations.  If we add a new field or a work item we have to go into the configuration source of the child project even though there is nothing in the process configuration i have to add a blank line to get the fields to show up on the creation.

Next now we have it showing up in the creating work item,  all the previous work items are showing up disable where we can not select the dropdowns.

This is a critical issue for us, any help will be appreciated.

For the previous created work items, have you run "synchronize attributes" for them?
Please see https://jazz.net/help-dev/clm/index.jsp?re=1&topic=/com.ibm.team.workitem.doc/topics/t_updating_custom_attributes.html&scope=null

In addition, after you add new attribute in the master project, if you check "Final (ignore customization of this operation in child areas)", could you see the new attribute in the child project?

Thanks.

We tried the instructions in the link but it didn't work (there was no option to “Synchronize Attributes”). However, the good news is that we were able to find another way to edit a batch of work items in the front end.

I tested it out first, then did the batch update for all Defects and the field is now functional in all of the previously logged defects.

There is and users are continuously not able to locate the feature. See https://jazz.net/library/article/529 for how to and http://rsjazz.wordpress.com/2012/11/19/using-an-expression-to-synchronize-attributes-for-work-items-of-a-specific-type/ for a programmatic appoach.
