We have the Version 4.0.3 RTC Server installed. Should the plug-ins and client that we put out to the user community be version 4.0.3 as well or should they be the latest version? What is preferable? Getting the server upgraded takes time around here.

there is functional value in using the latest eclipse client. I can connecto to our 4.0.4 server with a 3.0.1.3 clent.
I can't do everything but most of the time it works.
4.0.4 client is full function.
synched is best.
there is also a lot of server polling (workitem events. build events) cause by the earlier (prior to 4.0.3) versions.. so getting the client to 4.0.3 or above allows you to centrally manage this polling. (admin for this is in the ccm admin for feed settings)
see Enable Feed Throttle Management
