Archive or Delete Test case ?

Hello,
we have QM 4.0 for one of our customers.
Currently one of customers wants to archive a Test case and he can't find this option among those: Edit, Run, Delete, etc. when having the Test case open.
Nevertheless, in the Project Configuration/Team Configuration/Permissions, this Action is listed under QM/Save Test Case/Archive.

The question is: it is possible to archive a test Case and if so, how?
Should one treat  Test Case Delete as Archive or did I misunderstand something?

Thank you,
Zica

Hi Zica,

Restoring archived test artifacts is not yet supported. Please see enhancement https://jazz.net/jazz02/resource/itemName/com.ibm.team.workitem.WorkItem/37312

However, in RQM 4.0.3 IBM delivered the first half of this capability, which is to show archived items and permanently delete archived items via https://jazz.net/jazz02/web/projects/Rational%20Quality%20Manager#action=com.ibm.team.workitem.viewWorkItem&id=52743

More on this feature can be found here:

Thanks,
Brett

Thank you Brett,

Now  I have also the answer to the not yet asked question on how to restore the archived test case.

From what I read in the info you pointed to me I deduce that Archive and Delete is currently the same for the  Save Test case (server) action.
In Permissions one can see Save Test case (server) with sub-options: Archive, Create,... but Delete.
In Test case in the Action Menu there are several options: Edit, Delete, ..but Archive.

This is misleading info in my opinion as long as the implementation of the Archive/restore is not finalized yet.

Thanks,
Zica

 Zica,

Yes, you could say that "Archive" and "Delete" are used interchangeably in some contexts.  But the distinction really is that "delete" implies something is gone for good; it no longer exists.  And that is the way the operation should be thought of from UI perspective (with the exceptions and changes underfoot Brett noted).  But even though you may use a "Delete" in the UI, the data is still there in the database, though no longer accessible.  "Archive" implies a change in storage and that it could be retrieved in some way.  And archive is what happens in the system when you "delete/UI" an artifact.

Hope this helps.

I think Zica has valid point there that GUI action has the delete action item but it does not exist in the permission list which is listed as archive and this could be confusing. When the tool has restore archived test assets in 4.0.5(https://jazz.net/jazz02/web/projects/Rational%20Quality%20Manager#action=com.ibm.team.workitem.viewWorkItem&id=83618), I believe the delete(from trash view) and archive(from action UI) should make clear and permission may need both.
