Usage of RTC work item field Time Spent?

Our project documents the total effort spent on a defect.  What is the standard RTC field "Time Spent" intended for and linked to (plans, timeline iterations, etc.)?  Would this be an appropriate use of this field?

We know how to add a custom field but we want to use RTC as close to out of the box as possible for ease of setup and maintenance.

Thoughts?

Normally, "Time Spent" is intended for use of actual effort used for the workitem. You will also see Estimate.

Total number of "Time Spent"/"Effort" is tracked in progress bar of workitem (not displayed by default) / iteration plan.

Note that If you are using "Formal Project Management Process". "Time Spent" comes from Time Sheet which allows each developers to enter detail efforts. You can turn off this so that developers can enter total effort in the field directly.
