I noticed there is a third party tool out there taking diagrams and turning them into RTC workflows. It uses a tool called Graphviz. The post is old wonder if this technique is in widespread use.

A comment on Honza's blog dated May 2, 2013 claims it still works fine with RTC 4.0.1. I'm not sure anyone can say how widely used it is but it still seems to work.
