problems with sprites / images when setting up the RTC Extensibility workshop

Thanks for the great workshop!
I have a problem during the setup of the RTC environment. I followed the steps but get some problems, there are some exceptions in RTC which cause some pages not to work. The most disturbing problem I have: When I try to follow your Step 1.6 (Test the jetty based server launch), step 29 (connect with the browser), the startup page with the login will not show, only the word "Loading..."
In the RTC Client I get the exception "2013-03-18 16:02:34.447:WARN::/jazz/web/_style/
java.lang.NullPointerException at net.jazz.ajax.model.Sprite.writeCSS(Sprite.java:125)"

This seems to relate to the error I got with Tomcat "org.eclipse.core.runtime.AssertionFailedException: assertion failed: Sprite generation is non-deterministic
org.eclipse.core.runtime.Assert.isTrue(Assert.java:110)
net.jazz.ajax.model.SpriteLayout$Algorithm$1.compare(SpriteLayout.java:130)"
(which was also mentioned in https://jazz.net/forum/questions/87244/rtc-40-install-error-assertionfailedexception-sprite-generation-is-non-deterministic - with no solution given).
I tried to debug this situation and notice that the final List<URL> images has some entries which are not valid (some of the contained "images" are empty, i.e. the array has some empty entries)
My knowledge of RTC is not sufficient to find the exact reason for this.
My computer is a Windows 2008 server - I had RTC installed on it before, so the problem might stem from some previous, not completely cleaned up environment.
a) can you help me in finding the core reason for this problem?
b) if not, can you tell me what I have to remove from my computer to be able to begin again with the installation from scratch with no traces of an old installation that might disturb me?
Thanks very much and best regards,
Mike

Hi Mike, I have never seen that message ever, when I upgraded the workshop for 4.0. what machine are you running? What OS? Are you using the 64 bit ZIP version of RTC? Have you used 7Zip to unzip? Does the Other RTC that you have work OK?

Did the step before, running the JUNIT test to create the repository run OK? Did you switch your environment to UTF-8 as described in the beginning?

I just blogged some more information here: http://rsjazz.wordpress.com/2013/02/28/setting-up-rational-team-concert-for-api-development/

Hello Ralph,
that was a very fast answer! Thank you!

My machine is actually a VM, Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1, 64 bit.
No, I did not install a 64 bit version - when I look at the download page of 4.0, the only products downloadable especially for Win 64 bit seem to be the "context aware search engine" and the "SCM tools", both of them are not required in your workshop AFIAK. Did I overlook something?
Yes, I used 7zip. (I installed the workshop into d:\IBM\RTC40dev instead of c:\RTC40dev - but I hope that these 4 extra characters will not be a problem).
No, the other RTC also did not work 100%. I had similar problems after I made an upgrade from 4.0.0.1 to 4.1 and rolled back to 4.0.0.1. So, there might be a problem with the machine, but I have no idea what might be the reason.
Yes, the "create repository" worked seemingly without a problem. I got some exceptions, as you stated in the workshop, but did not read them. At the end, all three runs have been completed.
Yes, I switched to UTF-8.
Unfortunately the information on your blog did not help yet.
Do you have any idea how I can get closer to the resolution of my problem?
Thx
Mike

Do you have another machine or vm?  https://jazz.net/downloads/rational-team-concert/releases/4.0?p=allDownloads now shows all the download you should need.

Well, it seems, I will have to get the basic virgin machine again and start from scratch :(

btw: When I look at the link you provided, I still see no difference - the only packages for "Windows x86-64" are the search engine and the scm tools.

Anyway - thanks again for your help!

Mike, I don't know what upsets your VM, so I can't provide guidance there unfortunately.

You can use the web installer or the Installation Manager Repository. The page also had a zip file for RTC only to install as zip. That seems to be gone. The Eclipse client is available as plain ZIP in that section for windows.

Of course, I understand. I will continue investigating into that problem later and will post an update here, if I find a solution. In the meantime, I will start again from scratch with a clean Windows 7 Prof. 64 Bit. This should not make any trouble.

Again, thanks and best regards
Mike

Hi again,
after I started the installation with a clean Windows 7 environment, everything worked like a charm. So now I can actually start going through the workshop itself :-)
I still wonder whether the installation with Windows 2008 Server had some issues because of UAC restrictions or whether some leftovers from a previous installation disturbed...

Anyway, Ralph, thanks again and best regards,
Mike

Hi Mike, good you got it working.

I have quite a few different installs 2.x - 4.x in parallel on my machine. I have never seen any side effects. So I would guess something was odd with your Windows 2008 Install.
