Design Management 4.0.1- data management mode

Monika Gupta (15279) | asked Mar 18 '13, 7:14 a.m.

Under the Data Management header, There are two modes to manage the data :

1. Managed externally using import definition

2. Actively managed with Design Manager

can someone explain me, which mode should be used in what conditions? Any best/recommeneded practices?

Externally Managed project areas cannot be modified except by subsequent imports while resources in Actively Managed projects are modifiable by end users.

Note there are two ways to add existing models to a DM project, the first is by using an import definition into an Externally Managed project. The second is to use the Rhapsody or RSA clients to add them to an Actively Managed project.

There are three expected usage scenarios:

1. Customers have existing models and workflow but would like to use DM for review or browse of models with work item integration and OSLC support to other CLM application.

For this scenario the projects are Externally Managed and imported into DM periodically with an import definition. In this scenario the customer manages the model externally and the DM copy is kept up to date by the periodic import process.

2. Customers have existing models and wish to import them into DM to continue working, the copy in DM becomes the "live" model and users are able to work with them both with the web interface as well as the Rhapsody or RSA (Eclipse) clients.

For this scenario the projects are Actively Managed, though it is possible to start them as Externally Managed and then make them Actively Managed to enable editing.

3. Customers are working with new models in new projects, for this scenario we expect the project to be initially created as Actively Managed.

Note than once a model is Actively Managed by DM it is currently not possible to re-export it to the RSA or Rhapsody formats.

Hi Monika,

Another evolving source of information is available on our wiki at https://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/DmDeployment .   This isn't comprehensive but gives a bit more information about the two modes.
