Use case diagram only shows bubble without use case name

Ankur Bhattacharya (5897) | asked May 07 '12, 7:40 a.m.
Hi,

We are using RSADM 3.0 on WAS, Linux.

We are facing a problem whereby when we try to view the use case diagrams using the web client, the names of the actors and use cases are not visible. Only use case bubbles and the actor straw-man is visible.

We are not facing this problem for the Component diagrams and Class diagrams.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ankur

Please try to zoom in using the zoom slider at the top of the diagram in the web client. If the text is not present at all, please ensure the font used for the names of the actors and the use cases is present on the server. You may check what font was used by opening the diagram in RSA, selecting the element, and inspecting the the Properties view or by looking at the font combo box in the toolbar.

Thanks for your reply. But I tried zooming in and found the text does not appear at all. I also checked the font used (Tahoma, 8), which is the same font used in other types of diagrams - which are being correctly rendered by the RDM server.

What else do we need to look at?

Thanks.

Tahoma does not appear to be a font that comes with most Linux installations. I suspect the reason why it may be working for other diagrams is that it's is set as an equivalent to some other font (which also has a corresponding equivalent on your Linux install). Please try with another font available on Linux or please install the Tahoma font on Linux, and then reimport.

It will not be easy to install the Microsoft TrueType fonts in the server due to restrictions.
Since the descriptions in other diagrams are visible - can we make a change in the use case diagrams to make them work like the other diagrams. If so then what could the steps be?

Thanks,

Ankur

The easiest way to resolve this is by changing the font used for those elements. If you have RSA on your server machine, please open a diagram and see what fonts are available in the drop down list. If not, please open the equivalent of the character map suitable for the version of Linux on your server or an editor which lists the available fonts. Then, from RSA, you can change the elements in the use case diagrams to use that font.

If there are a lot of elements using the Tahoma font, you could try it on a few elements first and then reimport to ensure this resolves the issue Alternatively, it may be easier to do a search and replace in a text editor.

We are using a distributed landscape where the model files get imported into RSADM from our RTC repository. I am not sure whether we can intercept the files in the import process and edit them in the server. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Can you change them to have a supported font and check them in to the repository? Then it would only have to be done once.

I tried quite a few windows font but still the descriptions don't appear. I also fail to understand how tahoma 8 works for other types of diagram.

I suspect the reason why it works for other diagrams is because it is not specified as Tahoma but rather some font family equivalent of Tahoma. If the model is not confidential you can post it or send a message to me, and I can have a look.
