RTC IBM i Beta 1: Repository services are not available

Jan Coetsee (46122) | asked Aug 08 '08, 11:50 a.m.
I just completed the installation of WAS 6.1 and RTC for IBM i Beta 1 on i5/OS V5R4.
When I try to access the Jazz console(https://<my>:9443/jazz/admin),
I get this summary status:

Error fetching server status information
Repository services are not available on the server. Provision the server to install the repository components.

I cannot spot any problems in the SystemOut.log (see below) except may this warning:

"WebApp W Error while adding servlet mapping --> /* Please set fileServingEnabled=false in the ibm-web-ext.xmi file which is under WEB-INF folder."

Any ideas what the problem is?

This the SystemOut.log:

    JAZZ DEVELOPER
Jan - thanks for your patience. It still seems strange to me that there are no additional messages in the WAS SystemOut.log after you drive the jazz admin URL. A couple of quick ideas :

    1) Is &quot;application&quot; security enabled? You said you were not being prompted when you go to log in to the jazz web admin. You can check this from your WAS admin console. After you login to the WAS admin console, select &quot;Security&quot; on the left hand side, then &quot;Secure administration, applications, and infrastructure&quot;. Locate the &quot;Application security&quot; section and make sure the checkbox &quot;Enable application security&quot; is selected. While I don't think the lack of this setting is the fundamental problem here, it will eventually cause you problems. You'll need to recycle WAS to pick up this setting. <I>.

    2) Would you be able to clear your browser cache and try jazz admin again after this change? Does the output in the SystemOut.log change at all? How about SystemErr.log in the same directory?

I noticed another thread asking about WAS Express, but there was no specific answer (yet) whether it is OK to use it or not. Because the installation instructions specifically mentioned the full blown WAS 6.1 only, I assumed Express is not supported and enrolled in the Partnerworld software access option to obtain the full WAS.

I am now confused about the profile.ini and i-license-profile.ini files. I editied the files using Vedit from www.vedit.com (great little editor which even understands EBCDIC and packed fields). In contrast to Notepad, Vedit recognizes the Unix file formats and showed two lines (I assumed seperated by LF instead of the DOS CRLF sequence). Notepad however shows one line separated by a small square block (I guess it is the LF character which Notepad does not understand). I tried these three cases:
    a) a single line seperated by a space
    b) two lines seperated by CRLF (DOS/Windows)
    c) two lines seperated by LF (UNIX)

I have a feeling the problem is somewhere with my WAS setup, and nobody here has any WAS experience or knowledge. (The WAS requirement will be an off-putter for many small shops). I personally would not have bothered with RTCi if it was not that IBM left us stranded high and dry by discontuing the Application Development Manager product as of V5R3 (guess which OS version our devo system is stuck at until we can find an affordable and suitable replacement version control system).

Per Bruce's suggestions, I used the security setup wizard to enable application security and now I am being prompted for a user id and password, and I do see these messages being logged when I drive the Jazz console:

These are the messages with case a) above:
00000020 CacheServiceI I DYNA1001I: WebSphere Dynamic Cache instance named ws/WSSecureMap initialized successfully.
00000020 CacheServiceI I DYNA1001I: WebSphere Dynamic Cache instance named ws/WSSecureMapNotShared initialized successfully.
    0000001f ServiceLogger I com.ibm.ws.ffdc.IncidentStreamImpl initialize FFDC0009I: FFDC opened incident stream file /QIBM/UserData/WebSphere/AppServer/V61/Base/profiles/default/logs/ffdc/server1_7a407a4_08.08.11_10.44.08_0.txt
    0000001f ServiceLogger I com.ibm.ws.ffdc.IncidentStreamImpl resetIncidentStream FFDC0010I: FFDC closed incident stream file /QIBM/UserData/WebSphere/AppServer/V61/Base/profiles/default/logs/ffdc/server1_7a407a4_08.08.11_10.44.08_0.txt

These are the messages with case c) above (which tells me it probably expects the UNIX file format for the .ini files):
    0000000a WsServerImpl A WSVR0001I: Server server1 open for e-business
00000028 CacheServiceI I DYNA1001I: WebSphere Dynamic Cache instance named ws/WSSecureMap initialized successfully.

Bottom line: I am still getting the original error (Error fetching server status information).

I am now trying the entire installation on a V6R1M0 partition. I will let you know what transpires. Please tell me if there is anything about the WAS 6.1 installation/setup I need to know about (i.e. do not install the sample applications, or whatever, or maybe I need add-ons that are on the distrubution DVD but not in the electronic download from Partnerworld).

OK, I installed on V6R1, this time installing WAS 6.1 from QSH on the System i (instead of using launchpad from Windows).
As before, the application security was not set and I had to do it manually (don't know if this is how it suppose to be).

I still have the same error, down to the same message in the log when I log on to the Jazz admin console:

    0000000a WsServerImpl A WSVR0001I: Server server1 open for e-business
00000021 CacheServiceI I DYNA1001I: WebSphere Dynamic Cache instance named ws/WSSecureMap initialized successfully.

We are anxious to try RTCi as a possible replacement for IBM ADM so we can get our devo of V5R2, and this brick wall is pretty frustrating.

    Jan,
please don't forget, this is the very first Beta of RTCi, which means:
    - Very likely, there are still bugs, which certainly will be solved as long as they are reported (as you and I try to do)
    - Don't hold your breath to be able to test this beta as a &quot;possible replacement for IBM ADM&quot; because &quot; This beta will not allow management and build of applications written in RPG, COBOL, or EGL.&quot; (see https://jazz.net/downloads/rational-team-concert/betas/i1.0Beta1)!

Yes, I realize it does not currently do the RPG stuff, but I believe it will eventually.
In the meantime I want to get acqainted with the product by trying our Java development on it (with the necessary &quot;beta&quot; precautions), for which we currently have no version control.
If you need help to get the C/RPG/CL/DDS stuff out the door, just holler (I have a vested interest in it :D )

    JAZZ DEVELOPER
Hi Wilfried - I think we're seeing that &quot;Error fetching server status information&quot; can actually have a number of underlying causes but displays that way in the Web Admin UI. Sometimes, when I have seen WAS problems with the CREATE LISTENER, it has indicated either a port conflict (either transient or permanent) or perhaps attempting to restart a WAS instance when the previous instance did not completely terminate for some reason.

Could you please post the logs from the new problems you are having so we can investigate further?

    JAZZ DEVELOPER
Hi Jan - thanks for your willingness to be an early adopter - I think we will ultimately learn something valuable from your experience in trying to get things set up.

    A few new comments/suggestions:

    a) the .ini files should be Windows/DOS format with CRLF. Notepad will show the box character at end of line, Wordpad will format correctly, RDi will format correctly (as two lines).

    b) From your post which mentioned FFDC logs, could you look at those text files and see if there is anything of interest in there?

    c) We have been testing with WAS V61 Base and ND. Given my understanding of WAS 61 Express, I don't have any reason to believe that it would not work. We installed a WAS 61 Express instance today and will install RTC in the next day or so. There is another thread on jazz.net which implied success with WAS 61 Express.

    d) We haven't talked about the contents of your log4j.properties and your WAS JVM custom property which points to that. Could you post some info about that? The reason that might be relevant is the fact that log4j is the logging infrastructure for the Jazz Team Server - if we might have a misconfiguration there, it might explain why we're not getting additional error messages.

    e) Finally ... &lt;disclaimer - I'm no provisioning expert&gt; But based on the way the Jazz Team Server provisions itself, simply changing the contents of the .ini files may not be having the effect you want to cause the server to reprovision and update. You can search jazz.net for articles about provisioning and also check out https://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/JazzProvisioningFAQ. Please adjust your .ini files to the format with CRLF as mentioned. Then, check out https://yourserv:port/jazz/admin#action=jazz.viewPage&amp;id=com.ibm.team.repository.provision The provisioning log there should be a helpful debug tool to see how the Jazz Team server processes the update sites you have pointed your .ini files toward. We want to force the Jazz Team Server to reprovision with your updated/current files. Right click on the Jazz Team Server icon on this page and select Reset. (Sometimes I have had to click a 2nd time to have the Reset option be enabled). After clicking &quot;Reset&quot;, you can either stop and restart WAS or stop and restart the jazz.war enterprise application. Revisit this page to view the results. Post and let us know if this makes any difference. Thanks.

It also works under V5R4 for me now!
Briefly: Turned out to be just typos and instructions skipped accidentally while changing the profile.ini and
i-license-profile.ini as well the WAS configuration.
Not sure, if it helps others, but here is, what I did wrong:
    - Typo in the path for both profile.ini and i-license-profile.ini (replacement for ./license-update-site described on p.4 of the Install Guide).
    - Wrong and missing properties for the JVM as described on p.6. For example for log4j.configuration the &quot;file:///&quot; (three slashes!!) was missing.
So, I can only recommend to compare all parameters very carefully.
    Thanks for your help!
