RTC and Software Components

michael garvin (116119) | asked Aug 06 '08, 10:37 a.m.
Hey, one of the ways we view collaboration our company is the sharing of software components. I can see in RTC that components and streams can be used to help a team work together on a stack of components, but its not so clear how one team works with a completely separate team to share reusable type components.

For example, we would like to be able to allow all designers to search all components, say by keywords in the component description, or by market space the component belongs to, or several other "meta-data" fields. Is it possible to have this notion of a reusable and searchable software components repository in RTC?

Related to this would be features around allowing the design community to rate components, so that "good" components can emerge from the rough by natural selection. Again, its a kind of meta-data on top of components that I don't think its super hard to implement or anythnig, but I'm not sure if RTC has that kind of inter-team reuse on its roadmap...does it?

I guess a related question would also be, is IBM thinking of this kind of stuff, but directing its efforts to a separate tool from RTC? If so...what is the other tool, where do I find out more information?

All of those are good ideas.

The Rational tool that gets closest I guess is Rational Asset Manager,
although to my understanding it is missing this kind of community
feeling you describe.

Yes, this is the kind of functionality that the Rational Asset Manager
is intended to provide. Note that the plan is to implement RAM on the
Jazz repository, at which point you'd have the functionality provided by
RAM in the collaborative context provided by the Jazz repository (but I
don't think the RAM team has dates for that yet).

Cheers,
Geoff

Cool, yeah we had though that RAM was the intended tool. Can you point me to more information about RAM, roadmap, beta trial access all that kind of stuff? I can also ask through the IBM rep we have here at Nortel I guess as well.
