Sprint planning and story points

Michael Baylis (1832719) | asked Jul 31 '08, 3:39 a.m.
Hi,
I am hosting the sprint planning session for our team this afternoon and going to try and use RTC to assist, using backlog queries, team load and Iteration Planned Items views.

However, there seems to be a hole in the planning tools but it is most likely that I can't find the correct view.

We use the scrum process and our product backlog consists of numerous story work items with an appropriate story points figure. As we select a sutiable story to be "planned for" sprint 3 I would have expected to see somewhere the number of story points planned for/completed for Sprint 3 increase dynamically. We can produce a report for the number of story points, but as this uses the overnight data warehousing processes it is useless in an hour long meeting. Now, we could use a calculator and work it out manually, but it feels wrong.

So, have i missed a view somewhere or is this an enhancement request?

Cheers,

Michael

Is it still the case that there is no way to get a live running total of the number of story points assigned to a release or an iteration?

I've been hunting high and low to see how to do this in RTC 3 and no luck.

This is very important for up-front release/iteration planning.

Scenario should go like this:

1. Identify a number of requirements in RRC.
2. Pull these through to RTC as plan items.
3. Assign points to each of the plan items.
4. Create a release with nested iterations/sprints in RTC.
5. Decide how many points each iteration/sprint can deliver.
6. Drag plan items to iterations until the limit for that iteration/sprint has been reached.

I understand you can achieve this by using estimates on execution items, but if you're doing two-level planning, these won't exist when you create your initial release and iteration/sprint plans early on.

At least a basic ability to see a running total of story points for a release or iterations/sprint would be a good start.

Hi Michael.

Sounds like a feature request. Currently, we do not provide live view of
story points. As a workaround, you can run the reports manually. In
the WebUI, login as JazzDWAdmin and you will see an option in the
reports tab to manually run the data warehouse task.

Ok, I might raise an feature request against the Iteration Plan view to include story points as well as hours.

Hello, I do agree wth Michael that a nightly view of story points is NOT enough.
We spent the whole day filling our prodct backlog and estimating the story ponts. Now e would liek tp see how many story points we have as a sum. I could not find a view for that.

next I assigne dthe stories to releases. Again I would liek to see the sum of story points for a release. No view :(

I don't recommend running the the work items snapshot manually as that could cause the size of the data warehouse to increase significantly. There was a request to make the Burndown report combine historical and current data into one chart. We were able to do that for 1.0.1 and I think we can do the same to the Story charts. Can you please a create a Work Item? and I will try to update the report template. This will require a 1.0.1 server.
