The Term "Asset" can be misleading... it really depends on what one considers an Asset to be.

Rational Asset Manager manages software asset... mostly software that is developed internally and references by other teams, or deployment environments ... e.g., a dojo widget, an application package (.rpm, Eclipse update site, .ear, .dll, .pdf ....)

Tivoli Asset Manager manages hardware components ... tracking machines (lic., who owns them, where are they located, what model they are ....).
ITIL terms the Software Asset Repository as a DML (Definitive Media Library).

It is not to say that Software Assets, and Hardware asset are that different .... they share similar characteristics: Ownership, Lic. .... But for a tools prospective, RAM is focused on integrating intimately with development tools, and be the "library" of approved software deliverables.
