We (the Jazz designers) care deeply about this issue.
In particular, we have tried hard to ensure that the generation of any tracking information is under control of the individual (in the Eclipse client, usually via "preferences" in their Eclipse workspace). For example, the "checkin" operation (which commits changes to the repository) by default must be explicitly invoked by the user, but there is a preference the user can chose to set in their workspace to have every "save" of a file produce a checkin. Discussing with our developers about using Jazz/RTC generally ends with some fear of being "too closely tracked" ("flicage" in french). The recorded information is fairly innocuous IMO: how a user changes work items, what a user is working on, what source deliveries they make. I'm not overly concerned that other people know what I'm doing (or not doing), but I want to know what other people are up to, because their work may have an impact on me. I like being able to see the load of other developers so that I can gauge my productivity, as well as understand how the product will be changing in the short term. It's worth noting that other tools can be configured to provide similar events - source flow events, work item changes, etc. We aren't providing something new in that respect. Jazz's awareness innovations are more on the integration side of things: it's easier to figure out what's going on, what people are doing in the near future, and the relationship between work items. e |
The reports team is also very aware of the issue. notice how jazz does not produce reports with historical data about individual contributors.

I think the issue is actually "culture dependent"; In France people are really concerned that others know, maybe too precisely from their point of view, what there are doing. And generally they are reluctant to the fact that a "machine" or a "tool" will give a status about the tasks THEY are responsible for ... If we want the tool to be well accepted we have to consider the issue seriously and have convincing arguments. Armand Aaron, you can forget about french lessons, we have translated the article in english/frenglish ;-) |
