How does RTC Planning Component work? Need help understanding

Vinay Kumar AV (17923837) | asked Jun 11 '12, 1:09 a.m.
We are in the process of implementing Rational CLM for an client having 300+ users. While doing so we are facing certain challenges in implementing the planning componenet in Rational Team Concert.

Our process template is based on the Formal Planning template with a few customizations. The planning component gives two dates Planned Start Date and Planned End date. These dates are auto calculated and will have content only when you take snapshot od the plan. We receive questions from  Project Managers that they want to plan the start dates as per their requirement means the planned start date and planned end date field should be editable one. In real planning world you may get tasks which needs to be planned ad hoc we can not ask PM's to take snapshot to find out the date. What should we advise users on this planning component.

As work around we could customise date fields but problem with them is they dont appaer in RTC plan view. The plan view is really good thing to edit the entire plan and if we can accomodate customised fields then it wil be great.

Also, can you help explain how the scheduler, built into RTC, works? It will help us in importing tasks from an MPP with the correct dates into RTC.

The main motivation for the traditional scheduler was the following assumptions.
1. The project manager will create the Work Breakdown with ball park estimates. This schedule is the initial or proposed schedules. To capture this they can take a snapshot and tag it as proposed.
2. Once the Proposed schedules are there the resource planning is done. Actual resources will be assigned to the tasks identified in the previous step. Once this activity is done the scheduler calculates the dates for the tasks based on the allocation. This is what the planned Schedule is. To capture this we expect the customer to take a snapshot and tag it as the planned.
3. The current schedule is what will be made part of snapshot.

If you have added custom fields then you can expose those to the Plan editor by adding the attribute mapping in the Project area editor.

To answer the 'How to add a Custom field to a Plan View ?', did you try:
1) Add Timestamp_Custom field to e.g. Task and its Editor
2) In Project Area Process Configuration, 'Planning-Plan Attributes-Attribute Mapping' section, add the Timestamp_Custom field
3) In a Plan, Edit a View, go to View Layout ... you should now be able to add that Timestamp_Custom field to the Plan view.
