work item templates - variables and editing

We are using RTC 2. Currently, whenever I create a work item template, I can only prompt for 2 values - Planned for and Filed Against. Is there any way to prompt for additional values - including those for custom fields in the work item.

Also - am I correct in my understanding that in RTC 2, there is no way to edit a work item template. If I want to make changes, I have to recreate it?

The way to edit a work item template is to keep a set of work items as
the "working copy" of the template. So you'd modify those work items
and create a new template version whenever you want to "publish" a new
revision of the template.

I have been using the technique that you describe to create newer versions of the template. However, I am not aware of any way to "import" the changes made in the newer version of a template into work items created by an older version of the template.

Also, it would be really useful if the history or whatever could identify whether or not work items were created from a template, and when.

That is correct that there is no way to "merge" the changes from a newer
work item template into an instantiated template.

You could submit enhancement requests for both of these features. Note
that the first one would be expensive to implement, while the second one
would be very easy to implement.

Geoff

Geof, do you have any information for the question below, too?

To my knowledge, these are the only values that you can be prompted for.
If you are interested in extending this to other fields, you'd need to
submit a work item enhancement request.

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Just checking on this thread again instead of opening a new question.

As it has been 2 years since this question was posted, was there any enhancement made to include more variables in any of the later versions?
