Can email be turned off for invalid work items?

If a Work Item is invalid, I don't want anyone getting emails about it unless Status changes. Unfortunately, when I go to archive invalid work items all the owners and creators are informed. The unnecessary email makes them ignore email from the system entirely. How can I prevent any emails resulting from changes to invalid work items?
